The God Particle

Many of you have probably heard the media touting the discovery of the “Higgs boson”, also known as “The God Particle.” – A theory of how particles acquire mass by interacting with the Higgs field; which gives everything its definition and its characteristics.

The Higgs boson has acquired the nickname “The God Particle”, in part because of Leon Lederman’s book on particle physics The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question?. Lederman depicts the Higgs boson as the “God Particle” because it is “so central to the state of physics today, so crucial to the final understanding of the structure of matter, yet so elusive.” Many physicists are displeased with the term because the term overstates the importance.

As for me, the discovery of the Higgs boson is another testament of the wonder of God’s creation.

16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. Colossians 1:16-17

The origin of the universe is clearly spelled out in the Book of Genesis and we are just beginning to discover some of the quantum mysteries the Lord has created. As science continues to progress I am continually in awe of the complexity of God’s creation. From the gravity that causes an apple to fall from a tree, to the exchange of carbon dioxide to oxygen in photosynthesis, and now the understanding of the acquisition of mass by way of the Higgs boson. How great is our God where scientists spend fifty years and billions of dollars to discover just a glimpse of something God has created and set in place; yet, scientists still have so many unanswered questions and theories. God is the author and the creator of all things on Heaven and on Earth. How great is our God!

Are you impacted by the discovery of the Higgs boson? Are you worried that as science grows it will begin to challenge religion or will scientific discoveries compliment your beliefs?
