Landmine Ban Treaty

News Blip: Landmine Ban Treaty

President Veazey signed a letter urging the USA to join a landmine ban treaty.  He was among 76 leaders of nongovernmental organizations who signed a letter urging the U.S. to relinquish antipersonnel landmines and join the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. The letter was delivered to U.S. President Barack Obama on April 18. Read the letter.

Church members passed World Conference Resolution 1258, International Ban on Land Mines, in 1998. It resolved that “as a church we call upon all nations to renounce the development, production, transfer, and use of anti-personnel land mines.”

Glad to know that our religious and moral leaders are continuing in this campaign. This is one of many ways Community of Christ pursues peace. And that keeps me energized & committed as a member.

My national leaders, USA, let “superpower” swell their heads. We support the idea of equality under the rule of law for all world citizens, but in practice frequently exempt our nation as a special case. How spoiled we are! Landmines wreck havoc, injury & death on innocent civilians decades after “the war” has ended. They force farmers to play Russian roulette.
