News Blip: 2012 Peace Award to Honor Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba
Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, advocate for global nuclear disarmament, will receive the 19th Community of Christ International Peace Award at the opening of the Peace Colloquy on October 26. The ceremony will be webcast live from the Temple in Independence, Missouri.
Dr. Akiba served three consecutive terms as mayor of Hiroshima and worked to make it an “International Peace Culture City.” At the same time, he served as president of Mayors for Peace. He grew the organization from 470 member cities in 1999 to 4,402 by 2010.
He is a professor by special appointment of Hiroshima University and serves as national chair for AFS Intercultural Programs in Japan, which seeks to build peace by building relationships. Learn more about Dr. Akiba in the May Herald.
